...just someplace to ramble about "vehicles". Which I've mentioned in some other threads.
After a year, I finally took the truck in and got the exhaust and rack-and-pinion thingie fixed yesterday. Ouch. It's one of those times I wish the had the setup to DIY. (Meaning the equipment, tools, and of course, ability. LOL) All three vehicles are having stuff done. Next on line...getting the brakes turned down. If I lived in an urban area, I probably wouldn't own a vehicle. I don't intend to sink much into the Dakota as it's just meant for local and hauling. But the power steering fluid was leaking out almost faster than I could put it in. (Too far gone for the "stop leak" stuff to work its magic.) |

Oh...thinking about repairs reminds me of our next door neighbor teenager and the "new" car he bought. Early 90's he got somewhere for about $400. (Almost half of my repair costs.)
He was really proud of his purchase. After a week or so we saw him working on his car for over two days. Wouldn't start anymore. He was really frustrated as they, as a family, almost have a "car lot" of cars, trucks, vans, box trucks, cycles, riding mowers, etc that they modify and tinker with. But, he did get it fixed after two or three days. Sure helps if there is gas in the tank. (Don't ya just hate it when the gas gauge doesn't work.) |

I had a PS leak a while back and the Toy is too old for there to be too many aftermarket parts for it. Man, Toyota sure is proud of their PS hoses. But it was still cheaper than a car payment. I know that the next to go out will be the rear window motor. That's gonna leave a mark but I might be able to find a rebuilt. Nor does the speedo work all the time but that's another part that Toyota is mighty proud of and again, no bolt on. But the gas guage works. |

Speaking of hydraulic hoses - I seem to recall the last time I was in the NAPA store here they had a sign that said "We make hydraulic hoses". Suppose you could take in the old and they could duplicate?

That's a good idea Bob. Or a farm implement center if there is one close to you. That's where most of the factories around here get there's when they are in a rush...the local Farm & Tractor implement center.
Wish mine would have just been the hose. I crawled under last fall to see if it was a hose or other minor leak. And knew nothing about vehicle steering before I got under the truck. Hmmm...looks like a hydraulic cylinder thingie to me and leaking. Perhaps it would have been easier than it looked to replace it, but decided to leave it to the local boys. I did fasten a hose clamp around a rubber boot which slowed the leak...for a while. LOL |

I got the impression from my mechanic that this wasn't just a run of the mill but a special high pressure job as I know they can and do make them up at their auto shop. At least I hope that's the case, this is the first mechanic I've ever trusted so if he hosed me don't tell me (grin). |

I'm sure that feeling will go away once your new toy arrives. HeeHee
Going to time it against your old system...how long it takes to render a movie? Just curious (lots) how much a difference it will make. |

Oh, you bet, I'll put the watch to it. Now if I could get a car with 100X's the horsepower for 20% of what I paid for one in 1982.... More on the other thread. |

Mechanics one trusts - Ain't that the truth! My trusted one up and had a mid-life crisis about a year or so ago and closed his shop and went to work for someone else in another town. Not even a note on the door explaining. And I have several things pending on the Intrepid and can't decide where to take it.

Yeah, these guys are good and they're honest or at least I haven't caught them trying to burn me yet plus they're one of the few shops in town that has a dyno; they know performance.

Just another tale on the subject: Just before Ike hit, my auto (the '98 Intrepid) began having electrical problems. One of those dreaded intermittant things. This veh. has a "buried out of sight" battery only reachable thru the right front wheel well. I had my suspicions that it was just corroded battery posts but I just couldn't get to it myself. Anyway I took it to my "second choice" shop. They "fixed" the problem ... by installing an overpriced new battery. I asked for my old battery and later took it to another source and the "old" battery tested out just fine (It was a fairly new battery less than 2 years old). Mark my "second choice" shop off my list and credit it to another kind of expensive lesson learned. I didn't have a choice of quibbling at the time with Ike due the next day.

Ah, the old battery deal. I actually had a good experience with that. Had a DieHard go out on me, went into Sears, didn't have a receipt but the purchased date was on the battery. They replaced it without charge. About the only thing I'll still buy at Sears. |

This is a good thread. The post so far reminded me that multiple heads might be better than one. I have a mystery and altho it's tractor related it might apply to anything with an electrical starting system:
My Ford tractor is regular key start system. Normally the sequence is to engage the key, the starter engages and turns the engine, the engine fires, release the key to run. Here's the problem - Now the engine will not fire until I release the key (disengaging the starter) and it is guesswork as to when that will happen, especially when cold and having to choke to start. Could it somehow be in the ignition switch? Yeah, I know .... this is a shot in the dark.

In the dark with you - maybe a loose wire on the switch?

That would be my guess...the switch. It should make contact when you turn it "on" but isn't for some reason till it's released.

WAG here but I'd go with the switch.
