Boy...these infernal combustion engines are sure fun.  I ran out to the hardware tonight to get a new plug for the Troy-Bilt tiller. The old plug has a symbol on it...but no name. So I've been searching online at Troy-Bilt and at Briggs and Stratton.  If I understand correctly, I can use a J17LM or J19LM...but the later would be better?

If anybody else wants to take a stab at it...it's a Briggs and Stratton Model 135297 engine "L" head or flat head, or whatever you want to call it.

I found my manual which references using a "standard 492167"...but then it also says to check against your specific model number. Sigh.

I found this interesting in general...for a B&S engine. Which told me my engine was made in 1994. (I've had the tiller longer than I thought.)

I got a J17LM locally then. It works.

Reading tech tips at their site (Briggs & Straton) I noticed they recommend taking the head off after so many hours and brush cleaning. Can't remember if it was 100 or 300 hours.  They didn't mention anything about our alcohol gas...just that they needed to be inspected and have build-up and compression removed.

Actually, I've intended to do that for quite a few years now. Actually...I figured it would make a good winter time project. Tear it down, inspected/replace...clean and lube.  But then...well...it's winter and cold and dreary...

Hadn't thought of that excuse.

Oh....and no heat in the garage. (I've thought about the basement...but then there's the odors and cleaning fumes. And some cleaners tend to be nasty....

If I took the head off anything it'd never go back on.
