That's a fun read. (I wince a bit thinking of my Fortran punch card days.)

Some people can really wring everything out of a box. I worked at a company that had a 402 but I never used it (nor do I think they did). It looked really complicated.

Reminds me of this old pin plotter in a design office I worked in years ago. They made us get it working because it was a "resource" we were not using. The guy that set it up was able to get it to draw a large circle, a triangle and a square in 3 different colors and line weights on a plan sheet before they replaced the regular plotter we were using. Funny thing is we never printed plan sheets in color.

Absolutely rolling on the floor funny (at least to me): When computers were sexy: Hilarious vintage ads from the early days of the PC I remember some of those. |

I think my first 10Mb was around $7k. Fortunately I had a client and they bought it for me. It was funky, funky, funky. I think it was before DOS 2.0 but regardless DOS couldn't handle the full 10Mb so I had to carve it up into multiple chunks and then use a "mount" program to load a particular partition. Still it seemed like a load of storage. |
