Have a friends computer coming over this afternoon....it was doing an update, looks like it was SP1, and he didn't think it was doing anything so he turned it off.

Tried some fixes over the telephone, looks like system restore is lunched so that option is out as is system repair.

Why, oh why do people insist on sitting on the limb they're about to saw off?

Yep, it's gonna be a fun afternoon.

Do you have backup disks?

Yes, for both Office and Windows?

What about your documents?

What documents?

You know, those letters, email and spreadsheets you create?

How do you back those up?

That kinda sounds like a pull the drive out...insert a new one and copy stuff back after re-installing Windows. (or a variation thereof...)

It's a laptop and I don't have a spare drive. I got it all back but it did take about 4 hours.

Actually the guy is one of my closest real world friends so I don't mind too much, it's just the silliness of it all that always gets to me. I did give him a lecture on backups and how I have three, belt, suspender and super glue but I think it was lost on him.

If people took care of their cars like they do their computer most people would be stuck at home, IMHO.

I think a lot of it is just a lack of knowledge. I'll give Windows 7 credit for creating an action item flag that backups have not been set up on a new install but then you have users that never open the action center.

Hehe, I guess it just goes to show....if there's some little icon down at the bottom of the screen I couldn't help BUT click on it just to find out what it is and what it does.

That has been really impressive to me.  Win7's backup and action center apps are a real attempt to help those that just want to use a computer without having to go to too much trouble to maintain it.

Backup, backup, hmmm, don't tell me.... I recognise the name... ummm, oh, it's that... no, hang on - I remember, it's been a while though.. OH YEAH! I remember now, the last time I threw my laptop at a wall after losing everything, BACKUP, that's the word!

Now, how do I do it again? ;-)

Hope you are all well, good to see you still going strong.

I'm alive, not sure about the kicking though - whoever invented work and children deserves to, well, live my life! ;-)

dBunny - Good to see you on the forum again.  Must be a good life then. ;-)

Doing well enough here.  Don has spruced up the site a good bit since you were here last.  You didn't have a hard drive die on you did you?
