XP, retail version, is finally installed on the old Toshiba laptop.

The "original" XP...no service packs...no updates. But I do happen to have a SP2 disk from Microsoft. Do you think I can go straight to the SP2 disk...or run windows updates via the internet first?

I've only done it once but I went right to the SP disc with no ill effects.

It still download so much stuff that I couldn't tell exactly how much it helped but it had to help some as SP2 was a whopper.

Thanks. When I installed the Toshiba version of XP a few days back...I thought I could install a SP and skip a lot of the individual updates. So I did...online.  But if it skipped any individual updates...I sure couldn't tell; so many of them!

Yeah, it's hard to tell. No, it's impossible (for me anyway) to tell. But it didn't hurt.

After I get about a half-dozen or so Toshiba stuff installed, like display driver, network and stuff...I'll go with the SP2 disk.

So nice not to have all the crapware!!

Whew. It's installed. It wants Windows activated to run Windows Updates manually on their website. But it won't. Unable to activate at this time...I can call a telephone number. Pooh. Can't believe it's because it's an old disk that was used on my first home-built desktop. That's been...gee...2002?

Automatic updates (just turned on) seems to work: Now installing 1 of 72.

Must have been a temporary MS glitch. The activate popup popped up again..and this time it activated.
