Thanks for the thought. That's a new problem that just came out. Guess it's going to cost Intel about 3-400 million bucks. 

I did check the class-action lawsuit over the nVidia chip...more than accident than anything. LOL  But somehow it doesn't include the DV 8000 series.  (But does models before and after mine...go figure.)

But...it could very well explain some sudden shutdowns and restarts the laptop has had over the years. Probably a good thing we weren't game players or it might have fried the chip sooner. (As I understand the heat problem.)

I'd be tempted to "call" HP again...if I thought I could have a conversation with someone who spoke Hoosier.....LOL

I got an email today from HP. A request to fill out a survey on my recent experience with support for my out-of-warranty DV8300 CTO notebook computer.  ROFL  It's not an 8300 CTO, it's an 8000T...but I had to say "yes..correct" in the survey....or that was the end of the survey.

Do you have anything that you would like to say to HP about your experience?  You betcha!!  I was actually polite. (a) It would be nice to talk with someone who could both speak and understand English and (b) all I wanted to do was ask about repair work to a motherboard on an out-of-warranty HP laptop but twice the phone rep asked me why I didn't just buy a new one and (c) I wasn't interested in buying a new HP product now, or in the future.

Dingbats  (But...at least he email does have a address to contact them (either email or snail mail) if I want to. I will. Just to vent. I know it's five years old and not under warranty...but still....that would be like calling an auto-dealership and getting the brush off just because your vehicle is no longer under warranty. Can you imagine Ford saying, "why don't you just buy a new truck".

Well pooh. I hate to apologize to HP, but I guess I must.  It is an 8300 series. The tag on the bottom says it's an 8000T. But it also says model No. EX177AV.  Which is an 8300.  Who knew. (Who knew especially since the tag did not say 8300....so only a half-hearted apology..LOL.)

A search for HP out of warranty repair turned up this page at HP. I spent an hour the other night at HP without finding this. And about 10 seconds on Google tonight:

The same searched turned up an "authorized HP service center" for in and out of warranty repairs. LOL  I'm not positive without looking....but I think this is where I got parts to fix my old Toshiba laptop.

Hmmm....their headquarters (and nearest repair center) is in Dayton, Ohio.  That's about 30 miles east, then 60 miles south.  Hmmm...I could almost drop it off.

Oh...I take back my apology to HP.  I said in the second post above that at least they provided an email and snail-mail address in order to contact them about issues.

I listen to podcasts by computer techs that he is on.  I believe he's a straight shooter.

There are other guys but I think he's the best.

I do know of a set of videos that you can purchase that will show you how to replace the motherboard...

You have a link to the "how to" videos? (That or a printed manual was on my "to do" list for today.)

Nevermind about doing it myself. I just watched a few more videos on everything from just cleaning the cooling fan...to replacing the motherboard. There's not enough beer in Indiana...even for the cooling fan...let alone the mobo.  Wow. No wonder they charge so much for working on laptops.

heehee - Noted for down the road if/when it ever came necessary here.  In exploring this new laptop I found that it has a function somewhere in there to rev the fan up to a "blow it out" mode.  Now if they'd just put in an EASY button I'd rest easy.

This ball and grid array (BGA) in newer stuff sure sounds awful shaky.

There's quite an aftermarket in BGA Reflow.  Actually....for only 1900 bucks I could buy my own computerized, laser-pointer and repair my own motherboard. Wink

You wouldn't believe what I've ran across while searching for laptop motherboard BGA repair.  Lots and lots of home remedies (vs an expensive precision machine).  Stuff like hair dryers, ovens (stove ovens), hotplates, toaster ovens,...even the top heater element of electric stoves. (But...gotta be careful not to melt the "plastic" components of the mobo while at it.)  ROFL

Out of curiosity, I went to toshiba.com and started there. Looking for "repair" options. 

A click on "services/support" radio button. Another click on a "repair center" link. One more on a link for "Warranty Coverage & Repair Options".  Put my Toshiba numbers into the search boxs, and...while not under warranty anymore, I get:

OK...I probably wouldn't use them for out-of-warranty repair. Too expensive.  However...who...it only took a couple of minutes to find the repair info (for both in and out of warranty repairs) that I was looking for.  I've spent hours at HP plus a phone call and got squat.

I haven't done anything yet with sending the HP in to get it fixed; still debating.

On the plus side of Win7: Our daughter took my Toshiba with Win7 to college. She has a multi-function HP printer that I told her she'd have to figure out how to install it. Perhaps download Win7 driver/software from HP...or if she was real lucky...plug it in and see what Win7 would do with it. Whew. Dodged the bullet on that one. She plugged it in and bing-bang badda boom...she said Windows 7 automatically installed everything.  (But I told her in computer tech language, it's not "automatically"...that's "automagically". HeeHee

Yep, automagically.  Coincidentally I just got in some tax stuff that needed printing and I was going to jump through the hoops of adding a new printer and it told me "If it's a USB printer, you don't need to add.  Win7 will pick it up and add it when you plug it in".  My, that's nice! Smile

Yep. Very nice. Depends I think on the age of stuff.  I think it was the Epson scanner photo scanner that I wound up going to their website to get Win7 stuff.

But even that flaky Brother fax/multi-function I had was an educational experience.  I can't remember the details, but it couldn't install it. At some point while trying to install it, Win7 asked if I wanted to update the driver list. Huh? But I said OK.  It took a while but it went online and when done...there a new list of available drivers to choice from...including my MFC.

Back to the old DV8000 laptop for a while.  I've just let it sit all this time...with hope to find a local place to reball or reflow the video card. Might have in Decatur (12 miles) but I've got to remember to catch them while they are open.

The laptop screen just comes up gray now...but I read a tip about hooking up an external monitor to it....so that's what it's doing now. (I wanted to make sure it wasn't completely toasted.)  It's running a scan check. Ugly...but says itis the video chip. (Five very wide vertical bands...with dozens of narrow horizontal bands.)

Sure glad I saved some of my links here in this thread. Apparently I must have restored a saved bookmarks file in Firefox and lost all the ones I'd saved.

Well....guess we'll see what happens. I bit the bullet on an eBay offer last night. Knock on wood. They seem legit, a history of repair lots of laptops with this Nvidia chip problem.

Time will tell. I had hopes of finding somebody local (within driving distance) to do a reflow or reball. But, no such luck.

I was at their web site yesterday afternoon and made use of their "all inclusive" shipping option. They mail a laptop shipping box, with pre-paid postage for xx dollars. It seemed rather pricey so I checked the local (16 miles away) shipping store. (They handle FedEx, UPS...other carriers I guess.) It actually would have cost more for the local store to do it for me, than have the repair web site send me the pre-paid box.  Go figure.  (ROFL. Not only is gas and Lipitor more costly locally, apparently so is shipping...!)
