Sure nice to be able to plug the laptop drive into a desktop SATA port! I manually copied data files over to another drive. And it's now running a Image For Windows backup of the entire drive. That's just in case I wind up sending it in and "something" happens.
Time for a nap now. Yeah...it's early. So was two or two-thirty when I woke up. Nuts. I swear the cat knows it's a Saturday.... |

Humm, re: the speed it might be 1.1 given when you bought it. Nah, just checked, 2.0 came out in 2000. Just noticed something new to me. In device manager there's now a tab (advanced) that shows the bandwidth is used by each controller. Dunno what it means but it's kind of interesting. |

Ah...noticed that too...whatever that means. LOL (Same thing I thought.)
Under USB controllers it says: Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller Bandwidth used (20%) (though I'd swear before testing it..it said 10%) "Tell me if my device can perform faster" is check-marked. Driver: Microsoft 6/21/2006 (Version 6.1.7600.16365) Not much else than that. When I get ahold of the newer laptop again...I'll check the specs there. It sure puts this desktop to shame.) |

Same exact thing mine says down to the driver date and version except for an 85 where you have 65 (last two digits).

Uh...it's shut down right now while I disconnect the laptop hard drive.
It probably was an "8" instead of six. I should have gotten closer to the monitor...not that my eyes aren't as sharp as they every were..... Hmmm. I might try the same test under XP...before removing the drive. No "additional details" like under Win7...I'll just have to time it...and go by feel. Nah...don't need to do that. I've had XP on it for years so I already have a feel. |

Did some more research on the DV8000 at eBay. And other places. Nothing I want to attempt to do. I can't remember the name now (BGA?)...but the video chip doesn't use "pins". It uses little balls of solder. Which must be positioned just perfect and heated special to the mobo. I also found quite a number of laptop mobo repair places...closer and cheaper than the one I posted.
This isn't the cheapest...but has very good ratings and is closer: HP DV2000 DV8000 TX2000 MOTHERBOARD REPAIR Service - eBay (item 320613102832 end time Feb-02-11 15:10:39 PST) |

Well....after days and days..I finally got an answer from the eBay repair place in California. (That specializes in laptop repair for a $150 flat rate.)
Not too encouraged. Or maybe other folks don't know what they are talking about. The Cali place says there is no heat issue with nVidia 7600 graphic chip....that "all" laptops have heat issues with the CPU and GPU due to confined space. And they say they can't tell what motherboard it would need, if it's totally fried, without physically checking it. Does that sound reasonable? I've found replacement mobo's online for DV8000 laptops....AMD or Intel. Mine has an AMD. There's quite a few laptop repair services on eBay. I just hate to jump in too quick. It's the "shipping and shipping to a stranger" thing that bothers me the most. |

AFAIK...it does. That seems to be what I found when I was thinking of changing it myself. I don't think I could just change the graphic chip. And after looking at some "how to" videos....ouch.
If I didn't have such expensive tastes...it would almost be cheaper to replace the whole thing. ![]() |

To me that Cal. laptop mechanic sounds like the "shade tree" variety. Reckon you could find a semi-local computer repair geek? I just did a quick search and here's one in Ft. Wayne and altho an Apple specialist the site does say PC also. A call might not hurt. http://www.signaturemacinc.com/service.html or someother place up there.

Thanks. Looks like they are all Mac. I did some repair work with A Plus Computers in Fort Wayne...laptop power plug. An old Dell (our first laptop.) It was either $125 or $225. For a $14 part. I found several places, online, later that specialized in that..for about $25 plus part.
Which is the problem with local places. And...not faulting them...but they are hugely expensive. Not a flat rate...but $50 to $70 per hour. I may call HP out of curiosity....to see if the $4 to $5 hundred figure I've ran across is correct. |

Oh no...I hadn't. Your link was the first I'd heard of them. I checked after you posted, thanks.
I'm just...uh...leery of local shops due to my last laptop repair experience. But...I've ran into some more places since running a search for more repair shops in Fort Wayne. (Google paid ads.) There's a number that specialize in HP laptops...DV2000 thru and especially DV9000 series. Overheating and going belly up. (But apparently not my model.) A nVidia graphic chip problem...that was settled two years ago in a class action lawsuit. |

Had to reply to a place in Florida that I found while looking for repair places in Fort Wayne. (A google ad.) They specialize in DV9000 laptops (big nVidia problems)...part of the recall...but maybe a DV8000 would be a no-brainer.

HeeHee Forget the rest of my update...reference HP.
I bought this DV8000 from HP because there was a LOT of bang for the buck. But all in all...I'll take Toshiba repair over HP any day. I don't know how long I searched the HP site for an "out of warranty" repair service. Never found it. I finally called one of their tech phone numbers. I got some gal I couldn't hardly understand, and vice versa. (India it sounded like.) When she finally understood what I wanted....she says...you need to take it to a local computer shop to have it fixed. HP doesn't have an out-of-warranty repair service?, I ask. "No" she says. And then...drumroll..."Why don't you just buy a new laptop" says she...(for the second or third time). "Thank you" says I, and hung up. If I did...it won't be an HP!! Man...I don't mind their products. Actually...I rather like them. But their service really bytes!! |
