It will be interesting to see what new toys they have in this one but I am quite satisfied with 10.04, which is a long term support release. I'll download the iso just to take a peek.

Let's try 3 for 3. I'm using Ubuntu 10.10 right now and update manager has tons of updates to download and install.
The last two times I did an update...it killed my Ubuntu install (using Wubi). No biggie. No idea why. Actually, I do have a WAG...and "think" it has to do with the way it's installed inside Windows using Wubi...and updates to the boot loader. Time will tell. |

Good thing I didn't bet on it. Updated...but did not kill it. Good.
Now if I can just figure out power management. |

Odd. All power savings options are turned off for both "when plugged in" and "when running on battery power".
And even when plugged in....after about five minutes the display starts to dim. And soon thereafter...blank. And then I've got to re-enter my password before it ramps back up. |

I'm pretty sure it's your screensaver that's doing that. If you go to System, then Preferences, then Screensaver, you can turn off "Lock screen when screensaver is active".

I like to stick with the long term support releases because of their stability.
Oh yeah, the blank screen probably comes from the screensaver being set to "blank screen". |

My oldest passed on her old PC to me. I've got it up and running with Linux Mint 10 gnome DVD i386. It's quite nice looking. It's a polished up version of Ubuntu 10.10.

Yep. That was it. Never occurred to me. It wasn't a big deal except when "idle" for a while...reading a long text story or watching/listening to some audio/visual stuff. Then it was annoying.
