Yeah, they were buds in high school and both in the band together. The phone line is even rid of that electronic hum in the background and I must have been living with that for .... a long time. I don't think I get upper dialup capabilities but what I do get now is really appreciated. Just think how impossible I'd be if I ever did get broadband!

Drat! Line noise creeping back into the phone line thus limiting connection speeds to 19.4kbps at best it seems and that is painful. Lower sometime and reported at 16.4kbps now and I believe that without going to an online speed check. I feel confident now that it is not my house phone wireing but that of Verizon. Sigh, I'll start the process all over again I suppose of problem reporting to Verizon.

This line noise on my land line seems to be an intermittant problem and it's back. For awhile this afternoon I couldn't even get connected at a speed that would allow connection to the internet or check email. Down in the low to mid teen kbps readings. The DNS servers didn't seem to want to recognize such a ridiculously slow speed. (They probably chuckled in their digitally evil way) I'm mid teens now but at least connected.

Yep, intermittant. Last night sometime the line cleared up and all was well ....... After I scheduled a visit by a Verizon line guy.

Intermittent. Ours too or so it seems. The youngun is home a couple of days from college, and brought the good (newer dual-core) laptop with her. At first I thought that was the entire problem with the 'internet' being slow. (This older single core laptop just doesn't process all the junk that fast.)
But last night I was browsing the web using the dual-core...and it bogged down again. Not sure what the deal is. Click on a link to do something...and wait...and wait...and.... Really odd. I don't think it would do any good to call the ISP, because it's intermittent. And everytime I've ran tests, like at DSLreports, it checks out just fine. And mostly...once it decides to start...the speed is fine. |

Ok. last I posted about line noise was back in March ... well, it returned about a week ago and I kept hoping it would clear up like last time - it didn't. So I finally called Verizon and they scheduled a tech appt due this morning. Naturally when I dialed in this morning it connected the best it has is a long time. Cnet's bandwidth speedometer doesn't give me good readings but from my end I am connected pretty darned good, relatively speaking.

Maybe you should ask Verizon what they did with all that broadband stimulus money from the big O. LOL

Good thought Karl. Now to the problem - it returned. Ok, I reported the problem, they scheduled a line tech visit for today .... now get this "Sometime between 8AM and 9PM and someone should be at the residence during those times". I thought ok and gritted my teeth for a sentence of a day of house arrest. Well, about 2:30 I had to leave for about an hour so I typed up a note and left it on the door and the junction box outside the house explaining the situation, that it was one solved last fall by a tech visit, it really was static on the line and therefore their responsibility. I went and I came back in about an hour. No tech had visited in that time. At 3:58 I got a Verizon text message that a repairman had been dispatched and I thought Good, finally. At 4:03 I got a text message that my problem had been resolved. Wha ..... !! I'm not sure it has been resolved but say it has ...... What ticks me off is they make me a prisoner in my own home for 13 hours and for no damned reason! What's with that?? I am ticked!!

I meant to include - If they thought there was a possibility of fixding the problem from the office why didn't they work it like that and tell me so, then if it required a repairman then initiate the "be there to meet him" thing.

Now that would really burn my buns! Just rude.
I like that precision estimate. Wow. Never saw a spread that long. |

Ok guys...... maybe y'all won't have to endure my bitching about my dialup connection any longer. This afternoon I dropped by the Verizon shop and go me what they call a "Mobile Hotspot". A little unit that is about the size of a pack of cigarettes but half as thick. I don't know what speeds but it is so much faster than my dialup that I don't care about the small details, at least for the moment.

I just dropped by a broadband speed checker and probably by y'all's standard it's not blazing fast but according to my standards ... it is - at about 1Mbs.-

No more trips to the library? LOL This is the first I've heard of a "Mobile Hot Spot". |
