Can you imagine a small company trying to develop a new operating system? They'd never survive the lawsuits.

I don't believe it would be possible now.  Linux, BSD, Palm OS and the like, seemed to be just toys that geeks played with years ago, but they won't get that pass again.

Saw that on another news site. It's just lawsuit city anymore with OS's and Software. 

BTW...not having much luck with the link for some reason...

I read some more on this and found this.

When Google developed Android it included a Java-compatible technology called Dalvik with the phone OS. Dalvik was developed as a "clean room" version of Java, meaning Google built it from the ground up without using any Sun technology or intellectual property, said Gartner analyst Ken Dulaney.

"You can't just take a Java application from a Sun environment, where it's licensed, and run it on Android. You have to recompile it to Dalvik," Dulaney said.

That brings up an interesting question; can a vendor have a copyright on a language?

Interesting question, seems to me that there have been compilers from multiple sources for every language but wow, that's a tough one.
