And this is why I just hesitate...for the best of causes...for the federal government to get involved in fairness issues. Nothing is beyond their definition of the right to get involved:

Rightly or wrongly the DOJ does have the right to investigate civil rights violations...of both citizens and non-citizens at least per the courts. They have held that based on: "Nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws" That's "any person" not "any citizen". Frankly I think it's probably a good way to go, the problem is that the feds refuse to uphold the immigration laws. Based on that and his oath to upload the laws of the US Holder should be in jail or impeached. THAT'S the way to go. |

That'd be a start but when you look at the oath they all take I think it's safe to say that _at least_ the last three presidents should have been either in prison or thrown out of office. That oath thing just doesn't seem to mean much. |

Somehow I doubt if our founders wrote the 14th Amendment to mean how it's used today.
Oh wait...the founders didn't write it. Even though...it's like a Bible verse if it's read in it's entirety and in light of its historical significance. It begins (section 1) by defining citizenship. (To correct various laws restricting the rights of former slaves.) Even so...if the 14th applied to "any person" rather than "any citizen"...then the government should apply it consistently instead of willy-nilly as is convenient. (For example...foreign terrorists.) |

It's amazing how some other countries handle possible immigrants. We seem to let anybody in regardless of status and they are more than welcome to go on our welfare programs.
We had my in-laws Christmas dinner. One couple are school teachers and active in church stuff. Their one daughter is currently in Europe on a year-long mission type trip. Lives in France with a host family, but is part of a large group of youngsters. They have to raise their own financial support to participate in the program. But...there's a time limit in France. I can't remember if it's 30 days or 60. But an "extended" visit requires all types of proof of financial independence or support for their visa to be approved. Bank statements. IRS records for "x" number of years. Criminal background check stuff. (And that's on the parents...not just the college student.) It was a "WOW" moment for us. |

Oh...the "WOW" moment for us is because of one course our youngun is taking in college. One requirement to pass the course is an "internship" of a minimum of 30 days "overseas". Same kind of program...participating in a program that works with the truly needy and impoverished someplace.

Our daughter attended the U. of London for a couple of courses in the early 80s. I can't recall the duration but it was more than a month and no issues like that came up. Maybe the massive immigration of Muslims into European countries has given cause for crackdown. France has always been pretty odd and quirky about their sovereignty.
