Made the switch on the main machine today. Decided to do a full install on the fast drive so I packed up most all of my old applications with Move It, moved them to a USB drive, formatted and installed 7, ran the unpack program and with a few tweaks here I am. A lot easier than it should be, Move It made it so easy that I almost fell asleep. I do have one issue in that I forgot to remap my data drive to my data drive so I've got to get rid of a extra Outlook folder but other than that everything is running just fine. I do so much like the 7 interface with my tweaks. |

Very nice. What tweaks did you do to the interface?

Nothing big. Just visual adjustments to smaller stuff like the task bar and getting the right things to show up in systray. And it turned out that getting "My Computer" at the top of the screen was as easy as pie. This is the first machine that does justice to Aero and I'm not sure I like it. It could be that I'm not used to it yet so I'll give it more time but right now I'm expecting that I'll end up turning it off. |

It would be great to have a keyboard shortcut to turn Aero on and off. That way you could turn it off when it got annoying but then turn it on for "company".
![]() Did you go with 64 bit? I'm guessing you didn't since "Move It" seemed to have no hiccups. |

Another gotcha. Not serious but I'll note it here. UPHClean doesn't run in 7. My guess is that it doesn't run in Vista either. Easy fix, just disable it in services and then delete the \program files\UPHClean I also migrated SyncToy when there was a 64 bit version available. Again nothing major and, in fact, the 32 bit version worked just fine. There was a new version anyways so I just removed the old, installed the new and it took right off. |

I did go with 64 bit. Still no problems with Move It, stuffed everything in the /program files (x86) just as pretty as you please. The only app I've found not to work so far is Handy Backup. I didn't even migrate Acronis as I knew it wouldn't work but I'm not pleased with the built in image backup program, I may have to break down and go 3rd party again. I'd love to use the native WHS backup system but with the VPN I have to run it shuts down all my local network access and I'm not sure how happy that'd make the WHS backup client. |

Ah, MasterFind doesn't work either. Not as big of a loss in 7 as in XP as 7 search seems to be much, much better than XP.

Things sure seem to be going that way. Been thinking that would be the best route to take, even with the hiccups, because 64 bit is already being installed on so many machines already.

MasterFind didn't fail because of the 32-64 bit issue; it does an OS version check. I did have a scare. I had put docs and Quicken files on a thumb drive last thing so they'd be totally current. Copied them over from the thumb drive, synced with the copy on the server and then went to open one....corrupt....all of them. Fortunately I took a True Image backup right before I converted but since TI won't run on 7 I had to boot from the CD, go to the backup and restore them. It all worked out but I dropped a few bullets from some pores for a bit there. That's like 12 years of Quicken info...and even more for docs. |

Another issue is that I couldn't find a way to manually create a restore point. Found a neat solution here.

Is that because it's 64 bit? I never had trouble creating RPs with 7RC....but they would all disappear on a reboot. Strange.

Not as far as I know, seems that all the restore points in 7 are automatic, no direct facility to trigger one manually but since it has to be done there's (apparently) a hook that some smarter person plugged into to create a way to do it. And I might be wrong but when looking for it I got the impression that is an issue with Vista as well. |

Very, very nice find on the restore point shortcut creation. So was "Move It" able to transfer some 32 bit apps and set them up to run?

Oh yeah, no problem on the transfer of the 32 bit programs, they are all in the 32bit program file directory and other than the ones that do an OS version check they all run just fine. I did have to reinstall my old (11.2) version of Winzip, it worked just fine but there was no Winzip option in the right click menu but that was a piece of cake, didn't even have to reinstall the registration key, just re-ran setup. Think that was a part of the Move It process rather than a 32 vs 64 issue. |

Almost forgot the most important question, was this a move from XP or Vista? Also, it looks like your link goes to PCmover but I googled Move IT and it seems to be a Nero product.

I went from XP-Pro 32 to 7-Ultimate 64. It was known as Move It before it got purchased by Laplink and became PC Mover but they're one in the same in my references, I just have an old mind and keep forgetting about the name change (even though it was a zillion years ago). Also just got VPC with the XP desktop installed. Very neat. It's sort of like a free copy of XP. I guess it would be easy enough to install the replaced version of XP but still.... |

Here is a "How to" on getting the blinking network activity icon back in Win7: http://itsamples.com/network-activity-indicator.html

Hehe, fired up ImgBurn and noticed in the log window "Operating System has changed!". It then noted the new OS and went right along. Some folks just program elegantly. Sigh, I was not one of them but I can sure recognize it when I see it. |

That is a very nice touch for such a basic app.

Checked out your link to a manual restore point. Cool. Faster than my way...which was to enter "system restore" in search and then click on the create restore result.
