Our Blockbuster is half game rentals and 1/4 selling new and used DVDs.  They're selling 5 used ones for $20.

Our local home-owned rental closed several years ago when a Movie Gallery opened up. And the two gas stations and one hardware quit renting soon after the MG opened.

The MG was open only maybe a little over a year or maybe two before it closed. Now the two gas stations and one hardware store rent DVD's again.

The more things change....

Sherlock Holmes, the latest, with Robert Downy Jr.

Very good. Different..but still quite excellent.

(Robert Downy Jr.  I'd read about him quite a bit in the news (drugs and related problems) and didn't much care for him.  That was before every seeing him in a flick. So far I've enjoyed his performances very much in the flicks I have.

Yep, I thought that was a very good one.  At times I thought it was going to crash and burn but it fooled me and turned out well in the end.

We saw the "new" Alice In Wonderland last night and we enjoyed it a lot. I thought it was loads of fun and it's prompted me to want to read the book again. The most fun we've had watching a movie in a long time.

I'm surprised.  From what little I've seen of it, I thought it would be a dud.

Burton can do fantasy pretty good. He sometimes gets very dark but then this isn't for kids. Also watched Shutter Island. Not bad, not bad at all but another dark movie.

It's a Tim Burton movie and I've never known one of his to be "light".

But not as dark as some of his others.

Burton is, ah...different.  Found that out with his first movie.

Actually I rather enjoyed the Corps Bride.  And I'd forgotten about Beetle Juice. ROFL

I loved Beetlejuice as well as Ed Wood. The latter is one of my favorites.

I hope I don't pick anyones very favorite movie of all times to pan with this review but Hidalgo .... 2+15 of fascination with how bad it was.  Like the second feature of a 1942 Saturday morning double feature.  I loved the horse however and I suppose that's the only reason I persisted and watched to the end.  Well, the stories version of the horse as they used a bunch of different horses to portray the hero horse. Thumbs DownThumbs Down

ROFL  There were a couple of things I like about the movie, and yes, the horse was probably the best thing. HeeHee

"There were a couple of things I like about the movie"
Well, yeah - it was pretty G rated and the cowboy was very "gentlemanly" with the heroine and the good people won out in the end.  I liked those parts too.  Who the heck is Viggo Mortenson?  Well, no answer required as I looked him up.  An unusual person.

I guess since I know very little about horses and next to nothing about those countries I wasn't bothered by the facts in the movie.  Give me a good guy, who tries to do the right thing, decent acting, and no sleazy stuff and I'll pretty much enjoy it.  I guess I have a really low bar in some respects when it comes to movies.

Dang, I knew if I rated Hidalgo like I did I'd probably be crosswise with most. Heehee, it did have the right stuff, the right ingredients.  I must have been in an odd mood.  I'll bet if I had listened to an audio book version I would have loved it.  But my vote stands. Ermm

I liked it just fine. I'm not a big fan of Viggo's acting but I liked the movie just fine in spite of that.

That's two thumbs up, one down and I'm in the middle (one up, one down..LOL).  It is one of those movies that "mood" helps...kinda like Zulu with Michael Cain.  One time I think it's great...and another time horrible. (Hmm...haven't watched it in years.....)

Agreed!  And I actually liked Zulu.  Kind of like a British Alamo.  I mentioned books on tape - I bought several cheapie westerns in a truck stop for some of my trips out to West Texas.  Louie L'Amour/Zane Grey types that  you knew the plot and outcome from the opening line of the story.  Fun tho and sure helped pass the time once past Ft. Worth headed west.  Book tapes (audio books) are the greatest thing since grits when on a long boring road section.
