I could be wrong but I think THL is one of those movies where people see what they want to see; it doesn't really take a position, it just tells a story. So some see it and say "oh sheesh, isn't war a terrible thing, we should never do it, those poor boys" and others say "oh, sheesh, isn't war a terrible thing, too bad it's sometimes necessary but thankfully we have the warriors with the courage to do it". Hehe, I'm in the latter camp. |

We Were Soldiers - Mel Gibson and a flick of a small piece of the Vietnam war. The war scenes were hard to watch, bloody to the 3rd power. Massacre .... on both sides. I suppose I could say fascinating because I watched to the end.

Two I've watched recently on Netflix instant view: The first from 1950 and the latter from 1975. Both worth a watch for free with Panic being really good. Great cast, great location (no way could they have done this in a studio) and great dialog. |

Ya know, I really think I saw Panic a lo-oong time ago. Ahh, Richard Widmark, the guy with the evil chuckle, was rarely on the "good" side. And Jack Palance first big screen film .... how 'bout that?

Jack Palance (billed as Walter Jack Palance) just plain looked weird. You could tell it was him but if it was today you'd swear he'd had some sort of plastic surgery done.

Cinderella Man - Have we talked about this movie? It seems like we should have but search didn't find it. Anyway I watched last night and thought it was very good. I don't ordinarily watch boxing stuff but I can get wrapped up in it at times. Russel Crowe as Jim Braddock in the time frame of the late '20s into the '30s. A realistic depiction of the depths of the depression era. (I was thinking "Wow, I was born into this?") I was old enuf during some of it to remember bits and pieces but .......

We bought Cinderella Man. I thought it was an excellent underdog-comes-out-on-top movie. I love those kind.

I agree, it was a very good movie. I pretty much like all the movies Crowe has been in. I think A Beautiful Mind is my favorite but CM is right behind it. |

Don't think we did. And it sounds like I'm the only one who hasn't seen it...yet.

Max Baer was portrayed as a real horses patoot in the movie. According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Max_Baer_(boxer) he wasn't that way at all, in fact, just the opposite. His son, Max Jr. (Jethro of The Beverly Hillbillies), has a website dedicated to clearing up the misconceptions given in Cinderella Man and other places. http://maxbaer.org/

More kudos for Hurt Locker. Kathryn Bigelow defeats James Cameron and 'Avatar' to win Director's Guild Award Award for outstanding direction. |

A shot in the dark pick from Netflix - The Edge. Pretty slim on plot continuity and reality but plenty of action and adventure in the Alaskan wilds. Anthony Hopkins, Alec Baldwin and others in a wilderness adventure with some mental quirks. Beautiful scenery of Alaska and Bart the Bear did a great job. Do they give awards to animals? Not a great movie but if you watch it'll keep you on the edge of your chair.

Disorganized Crime, that Don mentioned earlier I believe: It didn't take long for me to think, wow...this has to be one of the stupidest movies ever. And I kept saying that for 140 minutes. Stupid...but couldn't quit watching to see what dumb thing would happen next.
Not a family movie for sure with it's language, but other wise just rather slap-stick funny.

Like both The Edge and Disorganized Crime. Regarding the latter I always had a great laugh at anything Fred Gwynn (sp?) was in. Well, maybe everything but Car 54. |

Oh...I loved Car 54. Of course...I was a little younger then. LOL Gwynn was good in Crime. So was Axton.

My bad, for some reason I thought he was in the movie but wow, he would have been way too old. Nah, I liked the TV series, too, but yup, I was a week bit younger. Haven't seen any of those episodes in years. Crime? TV or movie? Can't immediately place it. |
