ROFL I can't remember a thing about it right now...except the previews looked really good.

It was great, even got a 8.0 on IMDB and those folks are stingy. From what I've read it was very low budget; the director financed most of it so no special effects to speak of but well acted and a great story. It's a wow for me.

I have seen the ads, I didn't know it was out on DVD yet.
I watched Absolute Power last night. Great cast w/Clint Eastwood, Ed Harris, Gene Hackman, et al. A little far out in the plot but certainly watchable and entertaining. A 1997 movie.

I liked that movie. I couldn't believe that such a transparent character of Clinton appeared in a movie in the 90s.

Now....Avatar isn't on DVD release yet. I'd planned on seeing it by now...the special effects look fantastic. But now...dunno if I should. I might get depressed.
Can't remember if we'd discussed Avatar before or not. I remember starting to. LOL I've read on some far left reviews that it represents the exploitation of society in general by evil big business and industry. And a few days ago I somehow wound up at New York's leading black investigative newspaper website. And, sigh, there I read how Avatar is a perfect story of Western Civilization (e.g., white Europeans) and their history of subjugating native cultures in North and South America, Africa...and anyplace else. I'm already depressed at what I thought was supposed to be a fun high-tech movie. |

There are some people, probably a lot of people, that read stuff into a movie plot, an innocent statement, an effort to do a favor or a good thing ... just about anything in life. These people must be an unhappy lot just trying to tear down whatever has been built in front of them. Trying to make their own twisted view of life the common denominator. I see even in the comments on Wiley's strip (Non Sequitur) folks trying to read hidden meanings into the comic of the day. Or maybe it's just me - I'm not good at "reading between the lines" and you have to slap me upside the head to get a point across. I never was any good at interpreting poetry or the old Greek or Roman epics.

Sorta know what you mean. Of course my main problem was reading women. Just never any good reading between the lines or interpreting what they were really saying. I always go along much better with the type that would just slap me up the side of my head. Probably why I got married to the one I finally did. She sorta asked me out...

Mother knows best so they say. "They" mostly have the upper hand in social situations as you know.

Re: Avatar. I ain't gonna go pay money to be preached at by a movie director. I've got a professional for that and he doesn't make stuff up as he goes along.

Miller's Crossing was mentioned earlier. I watched it tonight and to tell the truth I kept trying to figure it out. I was thinking toward the end that it was a spoof on a '20s gangster movie because everything was so exaggerated. I ended up not knowing what to think. Not a fav of mine. I saw a review on IMBD that gave it a 10. I still didn't care for it much.

A lot of people don't think it was entertaining but I'm a big fan of the Coen brothers movies and I guess they just talk to me somehow. It wasn't a spoof to me, just a gangster story, like The Road to Perdition or The Godfather, about a group of gangsters in the 20s. True all Coen brothers movies have some weird humor in them, even their serious movies like Fargo or Blood Simple. Sorry, hate it when I have a reco that doesn't work but you will enjoy Hurt Locker, promise (it's not a Coen brothers movie). |

Note Up, The Hurt Locker and Julie & Julia. Didn't even recognize the names of the others. He's usually pretty good, I'll put the others on my list. |

(500) Days of Summer. ". Boy meets girl. Boy falls in love. Girl doesn't." Hmm...that's not the idea I got from the ads on TV. I got the impression from the clips that it was more of a "Teenage hormones go wild in the heat of summer" type flick.

Never saw the ads but often they'll hype a movie for a certain audience and it turns out it's nothing like the movie. The user review on IMDB makes it sound pretty good. I'll give 'er a shot but I think I'm going to pass on the stoning movie and Bright Star. |

Might have been my mood at the time. Plus, I'm sure I've recommended flics that have
totally turned others off. 'Ole M. Medved is evidently a movie buff and
sometimes dedicates a radio showto talk movies on his show late nights.
I usually listen to him Sat. nights late when I get to bed.

I'm pretty sure Medved was a movie reviewer before he started dabbling in talk radio/politics. I usually like his suggestions since they typically are more conservative. Notice that Avatar didn't even make his top 10 list.

The Hurt Locker looks great.
Avatar was just an exciting fantasy story to me and my oldest daughter. To my sweetie and my youngest daughter it was evil liberal propaganda. And, we didn't read much of anything about it before going to see it that would point us in either direction. |

I've only read two things about it, aside from previews. And that's the two I mentioned.
I just wanted to see it for the special effects. Looks fantastic in the previews. |

I don't usually keep up with stuff like this but it was on the home page of IMDB and it was about The Hurt Locker so... Long story short THL took top honors at the Producers Guild of America Awards. I'd never heard of the PGA awards before but "In the last nine years, the top PGA film winner has gone onto claim the Best Picture Oscar five times". |

Maybe "conservative" is back in vogue with film people? I know, I know, it was just funny to say.
