So far no network hang ups since I switched everything over to fixed IP addresses.

Don't know if that was it or not but it just "felt" that way but then I sure can't think why even an IP address conflict would cause the entire network to go down.

And it's still not fixed...just happened a while ago.

Not a thing in the event log.

Might just be me, but these critters (computers of any type) seem to be getting a bit wierder to work on these days.

Yep, that's what's happening except it's everything, Inet and LAN.

Go figure.

I heard on a computer tech podcast, within the last month or so, where on one occasion a PC on a network was killing all access to the internet for all the machines on the network.

Putting this here so I will be able to find it in the future....

Every once in a while all computers on the network would lose any kind of network connectivity. No internet and opening up the network would only show the single machine.

The first couple of times it really, really confused me but I finally figured out it was the WHS box but I couldn't figure out why.

I still don't know why but I found the subject event occurring around the time of the weirdness and did some background work on what caused it and discovered that the folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Crypto\RSA\MachineKeys

Had had all permissions removed. Reset them to full for both admin and everyone.

I'll have to wait to see if this is it but it was certainly wrong so no harm in correcting it but should this prove to be something other than the cause my next step is here:

Yep, her old 10+ year old box was a mess but another good thing we did to improve her lot was to change email provider to Yahoo mail over her ISPs mail account and Outlook Express. She had done something that let in a flood of spam, enough to make her old email app. just about useless.
