Did you know the Packers first loss was to a bunch of fairies? Honestly...

The Green Bay Packers had a stellar first season. They played 11 games in 1919, of which they won ten. Their first and only loss came during the last game of the season, when they lost to the Beloit Fairies. That's right. There was actually a football team called the Fairies.

Commercials - I always like the Bud commercials. There were some pretty ok ones but I don't recall any outstanding ones. The half time show is when I cook dinner .... I could care less.

I'm happy. I'm not a big fan anymore...but the Packers (when Vince was there) was always my fave...

And I thought the pre-game was a little pro-Steelers. The stuff with Sam Elliot. Lots of emphasis, IMHO, on the Steelers history and the number of titles they'd won. The stuff on the Packers, I don't think it even mentioned their titles and almost sounded apologetic (by luck) that they'd made it to the SB.

That was a quick 14 pts. in the first qtr.. Injuries - yeah, they keep dropping from what doesn't look like serious falls or pileups. I finally remembered my main dislike of the Steelers - way back they had a linebacker I really "hated" ... Jack Lambert I think was his name.

Yeah, and road conditions are the pits as are air connections. Both DFW and Love Field in Dallas were shut down for awhile this morning and you know the ripple effect that causes. Warmer in both Green Bay and Pittsburgh than Big D so I hear. Tomorrow is supposed to be a good day.

Bobby Knight - Yeah, he came down to Texas Tech as you probably know and he hadn't changed but he was a good coach and Tech had some good records under him. I believe his son is coach there now, but with a different approach to the game. I don't think he is a tantrum thrower.

Boy...it seems football season last longer and longer.

Oh...thinking about yelling and now yelling coaches. I think I know what you mean. Both in sports and work environment. It's nice, and beneficial IMHO, to see coaches (and players) get excited. But not a screamer throwing tantrums...which was why I never liked Bobby Knight.

Speaking of loud and obnoxious coaches vs. calm and boring - the Cowboys recently fired Wade Phillips ... his fitting into the latter catagory. And I just couldn't stand that, it always made me angry that it looked like the team was playing just like his apparent lack of emotion. I agree with the gist of the article but a little twitch of something on your face once in awhile........

I'm gonna go with the Bears vs the Jets in the "big one". My main interest during the game will be focused on the commercials.

Yep, it does. And tomorrow (actually today's) games are to be played in rather uncomfortable conditions, one in Pittsburg and one in Chicago and both not domed stadiums and I'd actually hate to be an attendee with the temps down in the 20s or lower. If younger maybe but I just don't think I'd be able to sit outside in those conditions for 3 or 4 hours. Reckon there will be some of those typical dummies out there shirtless with paint on their bodies? Probably.

Not that I'm a big fan, but New England getting knocked off is a shocker. The two teams with the best records in the NFL got knocked off before getting to play for the NFC or AFC championships. Plays well to the tune of the underdog teams.

Auburn's defense won the game IMO. Newton didn't star as I imagine he would have liked but neither did the Oregon hot shots. It was the grunts on the line that made the difference in that game.

Now I'm a little "down" - I have to wait until next August/September for the NCAA season to start all over again. As they say - "There's always next year".

I was a little worried after Oregon's first touchdown and the easy 2 points they made after, and Newton seemed like he was hurting in the second half, I think it was his shoulder. It sure was not decided until the very end. Oregon was better on defense than I expected. They were smart players. Very impressive.

War eagle! Wow! I am exhausted after that one. Never expected a game that close. I thought one of those offenses would break out in the 2nd half. Would not have dared to guess Auburn's defense could have kept Oregon held back like they did. This has been a season to remember for Auburn fans.

Final 22-19 Auburn! What an odd scoring game. Oregon routinely scored lots of point per game but the Auburn defense shut 'em down tonight and played an outstanding game all night IMO. It was not a sure thing until the final moment though. Congratz Auburn and Randy and his group of Auburn fans.

I never saw so many odd plays with tackles of the runner falling on the tackler but not really down. Good game.

I will assume Randy is watching maybe the most important game in his life - Auburn vs. Oregon in the championship? Odd game so far with a two point after and one safety but Auburn doing well IMO. Man, wish I had watched the NO vs Seattle game. Just watched a couple of youtube videos several times. That was one heck of a run by Marshawn Lynch, not to mention the quarterback and some offensive linemen were running close behind to try to block for him. That took quite a bit of grit to make that play happen.

I guess my tendency to root for the underdog kicked in on this one. They won their division fair and square. I don't care much for people saying they should not have been there.

I watched that game, at least a lot of it until I thought the Colts had it well in hand. Obviously I changed channels too soon doggone it! Pro games aren't usually emotional - win or lose, at least to me, but that one would have been I think.

That departed from my usual underdog tendencies (I understand the Seahawks were huge underdogs) but as to Washington State - me too. Always looked inviting as to climate and scenery but they sure have their share of kooks up there. Actually the whole northwest quadrant is somewhat that way it seems. Different than the Northeast kooks but kooks nonetheless. I think the midwest, the southeast, and the southwest (barring the state of California of course)are the only normal places remaining. Flyover country is "good" country.

The blossoming of the many bowl games is crass commercialism. It reminds me of what I think when I start hearing Christmas Carols (or Winter Holiday songs if you want to be politically correct) the day after Halloween and see the ads and the store windows fill with gift ideas of things you really need to buy way before Thanksgiving. It dilutes the meaning or importance of all bowl games. (If you think they have meaning or importance in the first place. Actually I do, they are important and fun to me.)

I'm not big on any kind of playoff system like the BCS. Same goes for having way too many bowl games. It leaves too much room for big money to get involved. It leaves more room for the arm chair "experts" to argue who should be ranked where, and room for more schools to feel good about what they accomplished. Now there is one winner and a bunch of others who did pretty good. Just my preference.

Just a wow weekend for the Little Ten. Especially teams from Michigan.

Michigan State's loss was historic. In the 74-year history of The Associated Press college football poll, the seventh-ranked team had never been beaten by such a lopsided score (52-12) -- in any game, not just a bowl game.

Thank goodness for the Irish. (Though I have to admit...I always root against Michigan teams...it's still a regional "ouch".)

Yeah...I kinda think of college sports mostly as public sports. A good many of the colleges are public funded. I just finished reading some info about the Rose Bowl Stadium. City owned. With $140 renovation in the works, financed mostly by Federal and state funds, bonds, et al. And city funds. Sounds like 'the public' gets to help pay for it...but not watch games from it.

And if I didn't have DirecTV and couldn't watch the games I'd have been very ticked also. They should be available to the general public over the public airways. I hadn't really thought about that until now and your comments.

I just rechecked my "extensive" printed out schedule and only 3 bowl games were available over the air:

Sun Bowl - Notre Dame vs. Miami(FL) (CBS played last Friday)

Outback Bowl - Fla vs. Penn. St. (ABC already played today)

Cotton Bowl - Tex. A&M vs. LSU (Fox this coming Friday night)

Edit - I was a participant in the 1964 Sun Bowl. No, I wasn't a football player in a former life but I was stationed at Biggs AFB in El Paso then and led a four ship flyover at the opening of that game. My claim to fame.

I take it that means that you didn't get to watch the game. ESPN had all the bowl games this year. I'm sorry you didn't get to watch. A really great game and WOW, it just really yanked at my underdog tendencies because I really got wrapped up in this game. The pre game hype about the size of the Wisc. line, their great QB, everything just pointed toward a rout by Wisc. Plus the general tone of thought about the non-automatic qualifiers from small schools or sub par conferences and even their right to be considered for a BCS bowl with the "big boys". TCU 21-Wisc. 19! (TCU is a private school with a student body # at about 9000 and the tuition is very expensive (unless you are a first rate football player) Kudos to the Horned Frogs! ... The Horny Toads .........

BTW - The Big 10 is well represented in today's bowl games but so far the South has risen again. Miss. St. downed Michigan, Alabama did in Michigan State, Texas Tech handled Northwestern, and now Texas Christian is playing Wisc.. I'm a little worried about this game tho but hoping TCU can hold up their end. I'd really like to see TCU, one of those "non-deserving" outside the BCS big guys teams that has done really well over the last couple of years take the Badgers down.

I just had a thought - The Ticket City Bowl was probably dreamed up by Texas Tech and Northwestern. I think that's the only way those two coulld get into a bowl game. Yeah. It's like these stadiums and music centers and such. The "Hoosier Dome" became The Lucas Oil Stadium(?). And the Deer Creek Music Center, Nobelsville IN suddenly disappeared a few years back. Oh..no..it's still there...but is now the Verizon Music Center.

Yeah, I know...capitalism at work...pays the bills and all that. Still, the "Hoosier Dome" had a connection to the state of Indiana. And with all the stinking tax dollars poured into it, rightfully so IMHO. And even "Deer Creek" at least felt like something local...inclusive...for patrons. And names often give a good clue as to location and purpose. "Verizon Music Center"...what's up with that! It sounds like some place to go to buy ring-tones or pay your telephone bill.

BTW, congratz to ND for the win. Miami (FL) is no slouch. And speaking of Fl. teams those "no name" Florida teams are now making a name for themselves. U. of Cent. Fl. whipped Georgia today as did the U. of South Fl. beat Clemson. And a game I watched tonight was Fl. State vs. S. Carolina and FSU bested 'em. It was a good game and fun to watch.

(An aside - There is talk that Charlie Weiss is gonna leave Kansas City Chiefs to become the U. of Fla. offensive coordinator for their new coach Will Muschamp who came over from the U. of Texas. That coaching is a mobile occupation.

Speaking of local talent in another thread, this might interest Don as it's about a kid from his old stompin' ground Tyler and John Tyler High School (I can't recall your time frames however): Green Bay plays the Patriots tonight and GBs starting QB Aaron Rodgers is injured. A rookie, Matt Flynn is to be tonight's QB in a first game, never tossed a pass in an NFL game. He is a product of John Tyler then LSU. Should be interesting.

The photos I saw showed folks with shovels...and it didn't look very broom friendly. One photo here.

There was a video at a local TV stations website. Looked deep. And flat wood benches atop metal poles type seating. Look like they laid sheet metal roofing in the aisle steps to make a slide for shoveled snow. Man...my back hurts just from watching....

That's definitely a consideration. Have you ever tried to clean up an auditorium type setting? It really is a pain and tedious. Maybe newer designs are more broom friendly but the old style seating made it tough.

Friday Night Lights - The season ain't over. And for football action it's the Texas UIL high school playoffs with Class 3A, 4A, and 5A games all being played in Texas stadium and televised on Fox Sports Southwest. I cranked in one game 'cause it was a local team and stayed for the second. One kid, the "premier" running back in Texas, ran for over 300 yards. Not too much of that "in the trenches" 3 yds. at a time stuff.

I think the Metrodome is the only inflatable dome. The others, at least most of the others are structural steel. Just trying to think of where an inflatable might be better suited but there are hurricanes in Miami and New Orleans, snow in Indiana and Chicago and forget Lam beau Field, they ain't ever gonna change I guess. LA maybe but it'd probably burn down from debris from a forest fire or collapse in an earthquake. Maybe inflatables just aren't meant to be except for dirigibles.

Not that anyone's particularly interested but this afternoon at about 1:30 central is what used to be a big deal bowl game - Army vs. Navy. I suppose the most interest it draws these days is with school attendees and alums. CBS I think. Or folk that need a shot of NCAA football to carry them over from the main season to the other bowl games (of which there many).

Heh heh - I happened to be watching and ole' Payton tossed 1 too many interceptions. Cowboys 38-Colts 35 in 1st OT. Kitna, the Cowboys "fill-in" QB is doing fairly well and it looks like the team is playing more up to it's potential under Jason Garrett since Wade Phillips was fired (about time).

I was glad that the score was not close on the Auburn - South Carolina game. Watched a play by play of the end of the OU and Nebraska game. Looked like the defenses rose to the occasion on both sides after the half.

I watched most of the Auburn game and all of the OU-Neb. game. You know the Auburn outcome and OU outlasted Neb. 23-20 and goes to the Fiesta Bowl vs. Stanford or UConn. Neb. didn't get to kiss the Big 12 goodbye with a win like they hoped. We'll see how they do in the Big 10 next year. Bowl matchups that aren't decided yet will be announced tomorrow night so I hear.

If the Irish only beat one team a season..I can forgive them losing all the other games. (Almost.)

What I really loved reading were some California sports pages about how the game shouldn't have even been close....USC was that much better than N.D. (I only caught a few minutes on TV, so I can't say.) All I can say to that is

Perhaps. They do get a lot of attention based on past performance that a lot of colleges don't get on their present performance. That probably irks a lot of folks. Just read a little more on the Auburn win. I should hang my head in shame. Don't know why I've always assumed Auburn was located in Georgia. Sigh.

At least ND pulled out a win.

There once was a day that Notre Dame was relevant nationally.

And then, there is now. Like Saturday, for example, when Notre Dame upset No. 15 Utah 28-3 on a cloudy, misty afternoon.

This was the first time I've checked the Fox News sports page. Ouch. The ND-Utah story was one slam after another, like..."The victory against the Utes – clearly the most over-rated No. 15 ranked team in the history of college football...."

ND must be the Rodney Dangerfield of college football.

I see that Auburn squeaked by Chattanoga ... heh heh! And the last hour I burned up the 'previous channel' button switching back and forth between the Breeders Cup horse race and the 'Bama-LSU game. Both breathtaking endings. In the race Zenyatta, a 6 year old mare that weighs in at 1200 pounds and stand 17 1/2 hands tall (that's a big horse) ran her last race before retiring ... and against the boys. She is an Amazon and Superhorse that has won 19 of 19 races. She lost by a nose, or a whisker. I don't know how she came from so far back at so late a stage in the game. One more stride or two and she'd probably have won. In the football game

Bama lost a great game to LSU 24-21. Just two real exciting sports events!

Well...there's probably very few whose public and private persona is the same. At least at that level. But...gee...dunno...hard to explain....I like that better than today's sleeze-balls who are the same in public as in private. Of course, I'd druther have them decent in both but...

He (Landry) probably wasn't the guy I think he was but at least in terms of his public persona he was top notch.

By "I think" I go back to the book North Dallas Forty. He probably wasn't the guy in that book either but even so, the guy in the book sure wasn't the Tom we all "knew". Ditto the Don Meredith character in the book.

Doggone good book, think it's time to reread it.

I should add that Jones ended up not treating Johnson as he should have but then in my book that's Johnson's fault since Johnson should have known what he was.

I was a pretty big Landry Cowboy fan and then migrated to the Montana/Walsh 49ers but I've NEVER been a Jones era Cowboy fan. His treatment of Landry was shameful and showed him for the kind of person he is.

Jones needs to go back to Arkansas and quite stinking up Texas.

Five hours of anything is pretty hard for me, especially if I'm sitting on something hard....

Since the move and the loss of the whole house DVR I've been "forced" to watch stuff that I normally wouldn't so I caught a bit of the first half of the Cowboys today. Yeow but they stink. Looks to me that it's not the fact that Romo is out but they have no defense nor offensive line.

Couldn't happen to a nicer team....

Knowing how cold soaked I got at the game I did go to I probably would not have lasted the 5+ hours of that game and then kicked myself for missing a record event. Football, no matter the level of play, is chock full of strange happenings and Wows now and then. Must have something to do with the shape of the ball.

Turned the TV on tonight...and caught the last few minutes of Florida-Georgia game. It came on in OT just as a Florida player was oh-so-slightly stepping out of bounds right before the goal line. Heck of a finish. (I was rooting for Georgia.)

Splendora 34 Tarkington 0 .... not that you've ever heard of those two teams but the winning one is the one on which my grandson plays defensive back (AAA teams northeast of Houston). They haven't had too many of those this season but are kind of running in the middle of the pack. To win is fun! Oh BTW, I almost froze to death ... not that cold but just the duration of it I guess. Better than 92 at kickoff though.

University of Texas - Mack Brown, one of the highest paid (if not the highest) coaches is hot (as in under the collar). Hot with his OC and DC and the team. And I imagine the alumni and I know the fans are getting a little hot about results. Baylor is upcoming next week I think. Baylor has been the doormat of the Big 12 for ..... forever altho they just became ranked for the first time in a coon's age and if they manage to pull it off look out for something resembling a nuclear blast in Austin. It's not losing necessarily, it's losing with really poor play and lack of enthusiasm. They have the talent but it's being wasted.

It was quite a day with Texas winning (couldn't help but holler for Bob when I heard) ND winning, Auburn and Georgia winning, and the #1 team losing for the second weekend in a row.

Auburn's game was much closer than the score. Auburn had at least two calls go their way that shouldn't have, both resulting in touchdowns. That second string QB for Arkansas was amazing coming off the bench. He did much better against Auburn than the 1st stringer did.

Sounds like N.D. was somewhat lucky. They've had a good second half...a first. (Barely ahead at the half, thanks to three Western Michigan turnovers...and a minus 4 yards rushing against the nation's No. 82 rushing defense). Reports say the coach gave them a blistering pep talk at half time. Sounds like it worked.

UT game ended UT 20-13 and it seems like a long time since I've been able to gloat. Well, not that so much as even smile. And the Rangers are still ongoing but it's 7-2 Rangers after the 7th. I see ND won handily (and probably should have) and Auburn/Arkansas had a wild high scoring game with Auburn coming out on top 65-43.

Yep, it's going to be interesting to see who comes out on top in the SEC this year. Auburn survived with a last minute field goal. I look at the rankings and it just seems odd the number of teams who several years back would have been no where near the top 10.

That Arkansas Texas A&M game was a good one. That Texas A&M defense plays tough every down.

Oops, I stand corrected - OU 28 UT 20. My opinion does not change.

The "blowout" - I watched the 'Bama game and 'Bamas' stats after it was all over were pretty anemic. A lot of the score was self inflicted by Fla. errors.

My "stable" of teams all did pretty poorly.

Auburn's QB has matured quite a bit since his first two games. Things were a little shaky the first half, but they put together the part they were missing - sustained drives which lets their defense get a rest.

LOL! Karl, I only have some cousins that went to Alabama, and thank goodness that's all. ;-)

Well, the Longhorns managed to embarass themselves on the field this afternoon and a home game at that! UCLA 34-UT 12 or 13 (whatever it was it really doesn't matter). First home game loss in umpteen years and I don't know why I even mention that. Ugly, really Ugly! And two weeks ago I can recall two commentators talking about the national ratings and one said "Where would you rank UCLA?" The reply "Wherever they are rated, they are overrated!" So what does that say about UT? A lot I guess. My expectations have just ratcheted down considerably for the rest of the season to where I just hope they don't embarass themselves too much again.

Auburn came back from being down 17 to nothing and won it in overtime 27 - 24. It sure was one exciting game. (Auburn being ranked as high as they are makes no sense to me. Everybody else can't be that bad. I don't think they have had one sustained drive in a game. All that quick scoring stuff doesn't work on a better defense.)

I'm on a strange computer that has broadband so I might sound strange. I can comment only on the UT-Tech game tonight as I have not looked at others but the Horns hooked Tech tonight to the tune of 27-14. Neither team looked too good doing what they did. I don't think UT will advance their standings for sure. First conference win and that's a good start anyway.

Auburn did okay when they played Thursday. They won't play again until next Saturday.

My oldest and her boy friend were pleased with Houston today. I forgot about there team and didn't watch, but they seemed to have enjoyed a workout on a lesser opponent.

Georgia got whooped by South Carolina's "Evil Genius". I was sad to see it. Not too many Steve Spurrier fans around here.

Heh heh - I didn't know what to say ... but you said it. Unfortunate and I imagine your new coach Kelly "stolen" from Cincinatti would have preferred a better debut. Not debut really but up in that country debut. Just joking about the "stolen" as that is the way of life for all coaches of any stature these days (except Paterno, who by the way had a team loss to Bama today). I don't know about Auburn but the Georgia teams didn't fare too well either.

They've been doing that with a game here and there for a while. I think it's just a way to get more games on the air. We actually watched it on my computer on the ESPN3 website.

We'll be watching Georgia play this afternoon since my youngest goes there.

BION way back when I was a kid ... well young fellow in my lower 20's used to bet on pools and Slippery Rock was always one of the choices. If my memory serves they weren't much better then than they are now. Actually East Carolina U is more well thought of than one might think, as is Tulsa. Not as small a fish as they sound like.

Maybe the best game of the whole weekend was East Carolina vs. Tulsa. You say "Who?". Well, yeah but it was an attention keeper and all offense and not much defense on either team. EC won in the final seconds with the stereotype Doug Flutie "Hail Mary" pass into the end zone with fourth down, down by 3, out of field goal range and behind by about 3. Must have been eight players in the end zone, seven being defenders but this 6'8" WR outjumped 'em all and held on for the TD! Final 52-48 EC.

I know no one has any/much interest in this game but it was worth watching IMO. Va. Tech (10) vs

Boise State (3) played tonight. BS was trying to make a statement that "We are worth considering to play with the big boys" ..... And they did. VT was trying to make a statement "We are better than rated" .... they didn't altho their QB Tierod Taylor (really Tyrod Taylor) is a real winner IMO. So is the BS Qb Kellen Moore . Great game and two teams to watch down the road this season.

Final BS 33-30.

2010/2011 NCAA schedule begins today (with a few small exceptions that played Thur. or Fri. night). And Karl might find this one interesting - Notre Dame vs. Purdue today at 3:30ET. I have a few games of interest on my tv docket this weekend. Of course these are kind of preseason games, none being conference games.
