Author: Karl_db
Subject: 1642
Posted: 11 May 2013 at 5:02am

Went out with the youngun last night to grab a bite. Went to get up after eating and thought they'd need to help me up....legs had stiffened up so much. I thought, "Wow...I feel like I've fallen down an open manhole."

Oh...that's right. I did. Or at least one leg. I think I've mentioned where I work has a manhole in my end of the building. The building was built over a storm-water line. And when we first moved in, the manhole cover stuck up above the concrete floor maybe a quarter or half-inch. The safety committee decided that was a safety hazard...somebody might trip over it. They had the maintenance fellow grind (yes...literally with a hand-grinder) off the bottom of the cover till it was flush with the floor.

That also made it small enough that if it shifts a little bit to one side (like after a fork lift drives over it) it acts like a trap door if stepped on. Our old supervisor's "fix" was to say "Well..don't step on it...why do you think it's painted yellow!" Yeah...right....like people walk around watching the floor for unstable manhole covers. And yesterday I had my arms full of supplies, couldn't even see the floor and stepped on it with my left leg. Next thing I knew my left leg is down in the manhole as far as it could go, the right leg kinda spread out on the floor, and the cover has swung back tight above my knee.

Got out OK and just lost a little skin. Whew. Dodged the bullet on that one IMHO. And I repeated the story to the new supervisor. Including that one of these days somebody is going to break a leg and the company is going to be out a bunch of big bucks for something that would be cheap to fix. Especially since it's something they've had many complaints about.

Before talking to the new super, I caught the new maintenance guy and talked with him. ROFLMBO (or maybe rolling on floor crying my eyes out?) I couldn't believe it....but the exact same thing happened to him last week when they were doing some maintenance in that area. And still nothing done. (Probably because he's learned if the head C.O.O. or the plant "safety committee" hasn't noticed something themselves....then it's obviously not a problem. It's a weird place in some respects.)
(Last trip I used the same plan but evidently didn't replace the key) IOW, I'm locked out and it's cold and I have no immediate ideas. After the mild panic subsided I recalled a window that had been replaced some years ago that never worked quite right and thought "Ah Ha, that's my plan". And that plan worked and I managed to gain entrance with a pocket knife, a step ladder, and a little dexterity and solved my problem .... Thank goodness.

And I have no idea when I turned them on. We ran some errands in Decatur. I noticed when we came out of Kroger it started a little slower than normal. Then when we exited The Dollar Tree...slower again. Once we got done at Walmart...nothing. I thought it was the gearshift again. Every now and then I have to smack the gearshift lever a little (or put it in neutral)...but then discovered the real problem.

Interesting lessons/experience here. We were at four different places. This is the first time I've left them on that somebody hasn't notified the store management....and they've paged us over the store intercom.

I walked back to the auto department at Walmart to see if I could "rent" (borrow) their portable charger. They have one...I've seen them use it a lot. But...gee...wouldn't you know...it was lunch time. One or two guys were going to lunch, the other two were required to stay in the bay and work, and the last fellow was a temp filling in for the guys going to lunch and to answer the phone. I've posted about this Walmart shop before...absolutely worthless and no customer service skills at all.)

One young fellow with a young son was just finishing up in the garage. He "grimaced" when he heard me ask...but he did offer to give me a jump. I'm guessing he was in a hurry to get going by the way he acted, but was nice enough to offer a helping hand.

It took them a long time to get the young fellows truck out of the bay. By the time he got out to where we were in the front parking lot....a couple parked next to us had come out and offered to give us a jump. I noticed my sweetie was having a heck of a conversation with the fellow's wife. Turns out this gal was a nursing aid...and had taken care of my wife when she had her hernia operation a few months back.

Sure a small world.
A co-worker I've mentioned before...whom I really believe is his own worst enemy.

He had gotten an HP Wireless printer for his 15 or 16 year old son for Christmas. From Walmart. But his son never opened the box till a week or two ago. And it was DOA. Nothing. Wouldn't do squat. But Walmart wouldn't take it back...only 30(or 60?) day return policy.

So what does he do...buys another one exactly like it from the same Walmart. Takes it home, makes sure that one works (it does) and puts the bad one in the new box. (No...I don't know why he put it in the new box instead of the original. Maybe they put stickers on the box?)

And he takes it back to Walmart. He's done it before, he says.

Not this time. ROFL Guess he was sweating they were going to call the cops on him for trying to defraud them. Apparently now they cross-check serial numbers on the box against that on the printer. (And something they checked on the inside of the printer also; not sure what that's about.)

Anyhow...he gave them all sorts of excuses...like "maybe some other customer pulled a switch-a-roo on them" before he bought it. Or an employee put it in the wrong box. Dumb.

Anyhow, bottom line is they wouldn't take it back and told him he'd have to call HP direct. I'm always glad when they take things back (stores in general). I hate to say it...but they're a lot more generous than I would be. At least big city or chain stores. Small town, at least ours, aren't very accommodating at all on returning items.
It's what happens when both spouses oversleep.

Spent about fifteen minutes this morning getting my Dodge Dakota truck door to unlock. It's in the low twenties, the seals are pretty funky and it freezes easy. Found my can of lock de-icer. Finally found a straw to fit it. Sprayed and sprayed. Just wouldn't unlock.

I give up. My fingers are painful and only half-working (too many years smoking maybe). And then I notice I've been using a key for the GM Safari instead of the Dodge Dakota key.

DOH
