Ed-I can't remember if you bought that Win98 CD from your friend or not(short term mem. is gettin' worse/long term, too)or if you are interested, but I ordered a CD a few days ago from this place and it came today and is the real thing. No gimmicks, just lay out $54 + S&H and it comes. Cheapest I found after looking a bit and even beats some, or most auctions. This is 98FE-SE a few $ more.

SE costs more than 98? Interesting, seeing as, given the choice I would choose 98 over SE any day!

I can't put my finger on anything specific as I have been on SE for too long now, but I distinctly remember saying to myself 'this is an improvement?' (or words to that effect) the very first day I got SE!

Well, the way I understand it, SE is only FE with a bunch of stuff on it you can get from the Update page. Maybe has one or two that FE doesn't have, but not much. Guess it's a salesmanship thing. You know-add a "Plus" or a "new and updated" or "Ultra" and tack on more $ or Pounds.

Sure Ed. You ought to give some thought to this 'build" thing. What a trip and learning adventure. Not without stress, I might add and am at the moment at a pretty fuzzy area and hoping to get thru it.(Installing HD and CD-RW and FDD) and will soon have to dive into even more unknown territory. WoaH!

It's very interesting and reminds me of when I was a kid and constructing crystal radios and such. L'il more advanced now, I might add. The technology, that is-not me.

Bob - Sounds like fun but I'm afraid that technology has gone forward and my ability to retain knowledge has regressed. I had to go to the Webopedia to refind what FDD meant. "sigh" I am watching with high interest and - who knows? - someday I might feel I have the ability to attempt it. Note I said attempt.

"Note I said attempt." Noted, and that's what I'm in process of-attempting. L'il anxious bout the "fire up"(used in the figurative)but will press on tomorrow, I think. I don't think I knew what FDD was very long ago. You know the old saying-->"Yesterday I cudunt spel teknishun, today I are one".

Well, we'll see soon, I guess. Will post results tomorrow, I hope.(If I don't burn the house down!)

Woah! $115. Lots of places lower than that one. Not a lot, but some. My finds via Pricewatch range upward from $54 to bout $98 or so. My $54 is a genuine MS book shrinkwrapped with COA and CD that says to be distributed with new PC only. Now I didn't buy a new pc with this thing, but that is there problem, I suppose. I hope.

Been gone a couple of days doing something I can do good. Donating to the Riverboats. Had a good two days though and didn't lose too much either. It's is kinda nice to sit back and enjoy the conversation on this thread and know that I'm not personally involved. I always thought I was the only one that was a dollar short and a day late and had other unique problems. I'm pulling for you all the way and hopefully will learn along with you. "Colorful dialogue" and all. ROTFLMAO

Ed-Good board, friendly board, informative board-and as Martha Stewart would say "That's a good thing". I say it too. Had a friend just a day or two ago tell me that he won $1200 on the slots(Shreveport/Bossier City). I guess it can be done. I haven't. Used to go to Vegas all the time when in the AF. Maybe ahead of the game-maybe not. It's entertainment, so they say. I always enjoyed.

Ed, Bob. Were you guys around at the old MSN boards? That's where I found Don, Karl, Harold & DBM etal. I lurked around for awhile and got a good feeling there. At some boards there is too many egos in the way and way too many "know it alls". Nice bunch of folks here, kinda seems like a family of sorts. I wonder where our leader is? I hope he didn't put himself out of commision by overdoing the "Good walk gone bad thing" or maybe he's still in the rough looking for that last ball.

I think I got in on the very end of the MSN boards but not sure. That was when I had just gotten on the internet and it was all so new to me that I don't remember the particulars of what I did and where. I don't even remember how I lucked into this board but it was sure a lucky day for me. Maybe our leader got waylaid at the 19th hole. ???? LOL

I tried to message to this board for bout an hour and a half with no luck just a lot of 404's. Or whatever the #. A problem? Anyway, here is what I had in progress when the glitch happened:Anon-Yeah, that's where I first "met" Don and Harold and PcKate. As you, the feeling was a good one(Harold was a little terse at times)and I got a lot of good newbie info there. When I saw the change coming I said "Shoot"(or something like that)but saw Don's link posted on the last day, I guess, and said "Neat"!(or something like that). That's why I'm here and glad to be. I never was aware of DBM at the time(sorry DBM, I just was in awe of the whole thing and trying to see all and didn't.) Looking back, it amazes me how a newbie can grow-I have grown a little but am totally aware of how much more there is that I don't know. Like Ed said "What's a FDD"? Well, wasn't too long ago I said same. I've enjoyed the whole experience and would be sorry if I had missed out on the little I have gained. I've been to many boards and know of what you speak. Hmm, it is Friday, isn't it-take off early and go play. Whatever-I'm enjoying and hope for continued enjoyment. It's a good thing.

I know that this thread is over a year old but thought I would reactivate.....hopefully....for a short time. I've been corresponding (jokes, etc.) with one of the nurses that I had in the Nursing Home and I just discovered that she has Windows 98 on a CD. Not sure if it's a "plain Jane" retail version or a OEM but she says she'll help me install it. At least I _think_ it will be better than the QuickRestore from Compaq. Any words of wisdom or "Uncley" advise from anyone before I schedule the "do the do" day?

Don - I thought I would put the CD in and push the GO button ..... Seriously, I don't know. I would be receptive of opinions on the way everyone else would do it.....keeping in mind my limited knowledge and resources. I do have some questions;
Sandra says that some of my Drivers are old and need updated. I have made a couple of feeble attempts to locate updated drivers without success. Should I try to do this before my install or will that be taken care of with the CD?

Sandra and some other diagnostic tool (I don't remember which one) says that my BIOS is more than 3 years old and needs updated. I have found that it is "flashable" but that it _may_ "crash" as a result. Should I try that before or after installing the new OS?

Ed - I just dunno how that'll work, I've never tried it.

I'd try and get fresh drivers before you begin as the install process, regardless of how you do it, may very well ask for them.

Yes, I'd recommend a BIOS flash. They're not to be taken lightly, but I do them and I've not had a problem in a long time. Way back when they were kind of iffy but today they're pretty fool proof.

Top link is for DriverDetective v2.0, which is free. Version 3.0 is one that requies registration, but gets you membership to drhq web site. It's rather handy...will list all the drivers on your system. Clicking on one in the left pane will display more detailed information in the right pane. And you can click on each line in the right pane to have it display more detailed information. Can be helpful in locating new drivers since it provides a little more info about the ones you have.
http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_description/0,fid,20020,00.asp

This is just Googles directory list of sites dedicated mainly to drivers. Handy place to start if you need a starting point.

A little help please....or.... my blonde hair is showing even tho my hair is brown/gray. In my search for an update on my BIOS I finally ended up HERE. The model numbers all match....... even the ROM. This is part of what it says:

Quote:

Download the SoftPaq to a temporary, empty directory on your hard drive and change to that directory. The file downloaded is a self-extracting executable with a filename based on the SoftPaq Number above.
From that drive and directory, execute the SoftPaq file. You will be prompted to place the formatted 1.44 MB diskette into a diskette drive to create the ROMPaq diskette.
After the files are created, you may delete the downloaded file if you wish.

Can I create a new Folder in my "Download Files" Folder to download this in to? Then double click on the *.exe file to execute a "Wizard" (my terminology) which will prompt me? - OR - How/Where do I find/create " a temporary, empty directory on your hard drive"?

I may try all of ya'lls patience before I'm through with this. Just call me blondie for short. (grin)

How/Where do I find/create " a temporary, empty directory on your hard drive"?
That just means to right click, select "new/folder". They may want folks to do that just to make sure they can find it. Or it may be one of those .exe's that unpacks a whole bunch more files and that way they will unpack inside of a sigle folder instead of all over the place. (FWIW: I have had a few updates that just insisted on being placed in a particular location to be able to work their magic..usually within either "C:\" or "C:\Windows". Just one of those little programming quirks.)

OK....think I've got the BIOS ready but going to wait until Tuesday (when my local shops are open) to try it.
I ran WinDriver Expert which identifies and backs up all of the drivers on a computer. I got a "Error Copying File" window that said 'Cannot copy file: File system error (1026)' while it was trying to copy three files. Two of them were for the Motorola SM56 Voice Modem. I have the drivers for the Motorola SM56 on a CD by itself. The other one was for: RAGE LT PRO AGP 2X [English] file. In the narrative box it said:

Quote:

New directory created D:\My Drivers 2\RAGE LT PRO AGP 2X [English]
Retreiving and copying files ......
C:\WINDOWS\Inf\ATITEC~1.inf

Driver Detective shows this as the only ATI driver on my computer.

File Name: MACXW4.DRV

Description: DIB Engine ATI Accelerator driver.

Company Name: ATI Technologies Inc.

Version: 4.11.2560

Product Name ATI 2D Accelerator

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I did a Google search for "DIB Engine ATI Accelerator driver" and I think the Rage Pro LT AGP driver is - J5.11.1b20 - or the - M6.12.12 - at this SITE is what I need. The M6.12.12 is recommended. Can anyone confirm my conclusions for me?

-------------------------------------------------
Driver Detective shows this entry but absolutely no information about it.

HPFdjc13.drv

Any ideas about it?

Ed - I usually prefer to grab the drivers from the vendor if possible, just to be sure. Looks like this is the driver ATI has available:

http://mirror.ati.com/support/products/pc/rageltpro/win98/rageltprowin98drivers.html?cboOS=Windows+98&cboProducts=RAGE+LT+PRO&cmdNext=GO%21

I'm guessing that the HPFDJC13 is a driver for a printer. Do you have an HP printer installed?

Indeed you'll be "flashing" the BIOS.

So you have a HP Deskjet do you? HPFdjc13.drv. Should be installed when you run the HP install disk so I wouldn't worry about it.

Thought I might double-check some stuff on your BIOS. Why the heck do they use one of four different BIOS's on the same make/model number. Dumb to me, but then I'm simple. LOLOLOL What's your BIOS specs Ed?

Looks like the webisite where you found your ATI Driver is a gamer site. (That's cool..I've found a lot of good stuff at those places!)

Near as I can tell you've picked pretty good. The J5.11.1b20 isn't exactly the one specified by ATI for your card. But it's a little later driver and should work. This guy looks like he's done his testing and homework.

Geeze...just thought of another question I had. Is your ATI a card that plugs into a slot or is it built into the motherboard?

OK...you might want to cover your bases and download the official specified ATI driver . Figure it can't hurt to have it.

Official Rage LT Pro AGP 2X from ATI site.

Another it might not hurt to have, though the way you're going your probably already do:
ATI Frequently Asked Questions

Back to your display driver now: Per the link you posted, this guy says: The choice of driver is dependent only on processor speed.
At 400 MHz, the M series is significantly outperforming the J series.
At 500 MHz, Direct3d is the same. OpenGL is also the same, but the J series appears much smoother than the M series.
I believe yours is either a 400 or 450 MHz isn't it. Though I'd download both, I'd give the M series a whirl.

m6.12.12 is DirectX 8 based. Do you have directX 8 saved? Reinstalling windows will put DirectX 6 back into the OS. You can download version 8 from Microsoft Direct X site. FWIW: I've gone always upgraded to the latest version of DirectX with no problems...at least after it's been out a while and they've worked the bugs out..which ver8 has been.

You saving all this stuff to a CD? Had something else but I wiped out my post (FFS} before being smart enough to do it on a text editor this time.

That's the "official ATI driver" from the link I posted. But you could try one of the other two from the site you found. The worst that could happen is you'd have to go back to the official one. The best that could happen is one of the two would work better for you.

* AGP Driver
* GP Miniport
* AGP VXD Driver
* Chipset Driver
* GART Driver
* VGART
* ALi GART Driver
* AMD AGP Miniport
* Intel VGART
* VIA AGP Drive
You might also want to pop open Device manager and see what, if anything, you have under the above. Processors, IDE controllers, system devices. Just trying to make sure none of it is special stuff from your compaq install that might need saving. That's why I was wondering about your mobo/bios.

and lastly, for now, how about for your monitor? Is it listed as a generic monitor or as a specific Compaq monitor? Might want to save the .inf for it if it's installed as a special Compaq monitor. (Though our HP seems to work the same regardless of being a "generic windows" or a HP M50.)

Easiest way if you can't find a listing under display properties. Open Search and enter *.inf in the look in field. Select all, hidden and all that crud. Look for an .INF with your monitor or compaq name/model on it.

Hope that's it...Did we cover your modem...can't remember.

Ed, I've got a copy of MACXW4.DRV if you need it, you shouldn't. Windows has lots of drivers for ATI cards. When you reload Windows, assuming you are going to use a "Full" version it will detect your card and other things and get them working again after which you can go to the various vendor sites and pick the newest ones up. I'm now using version 2-28-2002 (wme-j5-30-1-b02) for my vid card and have the 2 versions ( 1 is Karl's version) prior to that and the only real difference I notice is in the interface when adjusting the settings. I too had to update to DX 8 and to be honest for the stuff I do I don't notice a difference, perhaps if I was a Gamer I would notice all the features the latest driver and DX offer. Go into Device Manager| Display Adapters and click on the Properties for your card and click on the Driver tab and then Update and choose the option to "Display All Drivers" and you will see a whole whack of ATI's, in my case I have 21 listed.

Whoooeee....talk about boggle the mind. Trying to absorb so much information has got me spinning....comes with "advanced years" (not old age) they tell me. LOL Thanks to everyone for all the help.
Don - I grabbed that driver and yes I do have an HP printer installed and working OK. Any idea why it's not showing any information about the driver?

Karl - My BIOS Specs _I think_ are Compaq 686S5 04/08/99. How do I determine if my ATI is a "plug in" or a "built in"? I do have the ATI driver downloaded. I didn't understand what you were directing me to in ATI Frequently Asked Questions. My machine is a 400MHz and I do have DirectX 8 in my corral. Yes, I'm saving everything to a CD. It is a Compaq and found the Monitor .inf files with "Find" and copied/pasted them to a new folder. Will that process save them in the correct format to install them if need be? I have the modem drivers on a CD I got from my local "gurus" when I "taught" my tower how to "swan dive" off of my walker when I was bringing it back from the shop.

Anony - Thanks for the offer and I will keep it in mind. I _think_ I've got that puppy in my corral somewhere but not sure just where right now. I've only got the one ATI Rage Pro listed but have got listings for bunches of other brands. LOL

I think I've responded/answered everyone up to now. I've searched and read so much stuff in the last couple of days my mind is really boggled so think I'll take the afternoon off and go play some Poker.com or Pogo.com.

Ed - I suspect that the HP driver comes with Windows. I wouldn't worry about it, if it doesn't install when Windows installs you can always pick it up again later.

Most likely the video is built in to the motherboard, but, as far as I know, you'd have to crack open the case to be sure.

Hi again Ed.
Hey, I found some neat stuff on the Compaq site. (I entered 5600S BIOS into seach and up popped your post!)

There's also a diagram of your board which is MUCH better than our HP. The video card is a real plug-in card. Much better than one built into the mobo.)

Uh...sorry...wasn't meaning anything by posting the ATI Frequently Asked Questions link. Just thought you might like to save it to disk. I've always found them handy to save in case I ever have a FAQ. (Not often; usually my questions are unique and weird. LOL)

I was asking about your mobo/bios because the ATI site suggested making sure that it has the correct AGP drivers. Windows has them. ATI suggested double-checking for newer/better from the manufactures site.

So I'll post the below stuff and then keep quiet. I thought, if you wanted, I'd look and see for you about AGP drivers. But if you don't want me to, I'll just zip my little lips...or maybe I should say fingers?
Sorry I can't remember which tools you have...sometimes I get confused which tools you've mentioned using or if it was Bob...or even myself. LOL

Belarc Advisor
After running the Belarc Advisor it will display in your Browser window. In upper right will be Two lines: (The blah, blah, blah is what I'd need.)
System Model
blah, blah, blah
Main Circuit Board
more blah, blah, blah

Don - I have a install disc that came with my HP Printer.....the driver should be on it shouldn't it?

Karl - I wish I could believe them about the "plug in". I've seen several places that after I read for awhile the 5600S (and sometimes others) are excluded from whatever they are talking about with the 5600 series. (sigh) If it's a case of _need to know_ I'd rather take the cover off and eyeball it to make sure.

No "sorries" required.....my rocks were protruding out of the box and I just didn't understand. I do keep links like that in MyInfo for future reference. Thanks

Don't zip your lips or fingers on my account.....I might miss something important (or funny). All help is greatly appreciated and I can use all I can get. I was going to wait until Tuesday (when my local guru's shop will be open) before I did anything but.....I couldn't play "Age of Empires" this afternoon because " Display driver not, etc." so I went ahead and uninstalled and reinstalled the Rage LT Pro driver that I had in my corral. It went fine and I enjoyed a rousing game. LOL Any advice or help on the AGP drivers would be most welcome.

Here is the information from Belarc Advisor

System Model
Compaq Compaq PC

Main Circuit Board
Board: Compaq 05A4h
Bus Clock: 100 megahertz

The Belarc Advisor and Driver Detective are two of the neatest tools I've got. Love em. When I get through with this I want a "Lean, Mean, Surfin Machine

Will look some tomorrow. Backs killing me now and got to catch a few zzzzz's. (Do those "z's" look like I'm snoring? Do I snore? Saying I snore is like saying Bill Gates has a little extra cash laying around. ROFL)

Anyway just by eyeballing the info it looks like Compaq and HP are first cousins...or brothers. Looks like they've taken and modified what was probably a good mobo/BIOS and turned it into a special modified version of the original. (Usually a "dumbed-down" version.) One that means you can't go to the manufactures web site and download drivers/flashes because Compaq/HP has modified it. Hookie!!

Ed - Yep, the driver should be on the disk and chances are that it hasn't been updated since then, printer drivers rarely need updating, but still it's probably a good thing to check the HP site just to be sure you have the latest.

Amazing how little information there is on the web on Compaq details. Wonder if this is because they are so good very few people ask/write about them?

Came up empty handed with that info.

Lordee Karl! Cleaned the oven!? That's extreme! Other half must have patted you on the head for that one. Karl is a good boy.

Hmm , reminds me, I gotta clean this one. Had 1.38" here last Tuesday and much appreciated as the first in awhile.
Speak of wx, there is one storm forming just east of Fla. named Edouard(or something like that) that might make into something.

Mother nature has become a Mother of extremes, it seems to me. I'd like another " or two here.

Cannot believe my luck the last couple of days....reinstalled the Rage LT Pro and then this morning "Flashed" my BIOS, both of them went smooth as silk.

Since I have been saving things to disk in anticipation of a re-install of my OS.....is there anything that I should re-save because of my updating the BIOS?

Ed - If you have any special settings in your BIOS you might want to make a note of them but since you flashed you probably don't have any special settings as everything is usually set back to the default when you update.

Way to go!
